Mindfulness is a buzzword that’s been floating around the health and wellness industry for a while now, and rightfully so! It describes the state of being fully present and tuned in to what is happening in your immediate surroundings.
It is said that if we can carry the practice of mindfulness with us more throughout our daily lives, we will become happier and reduce the amount of pain and suffering that stem from both internal and external experiences. By detoxing our mind, body and spirit daily from stress and negative energy and working towards mindfulness at every turn, we can honor ourselves no matter what we’re facing – instead of attempting to run away or hide from painful experiences which only makes us feel worse.
Meditation is the vehicle in which we can reach an increased state of mindfulness. Through this training of the mind, we can embark on a journey to reach a state of peace, where our minds are free from scattered thoughts and worries about the past and future. We can start to focus exclusively on the present moment, and learn to find pure joy right where we are.
One of the most common reasons why many people don’t stick with meditation practice is because “there’s no way they can stop their mind from thinking.” But as we know, if we want to be good or great at anything, we must practice. The mind, just like muscles of the body, must be trained to work the way that we want. The more we train the mind, the closer we become to mindfulness and bliss.
With that said, here are my 6 favourite meditation apps that can help you surrender to mental stillness and achieve mindfulness.
This is the app that I’m currently using, and so far I really like it. With Insights Timer you can see what other people around the world are meditating to, which gives it an inspirational, community vibe. Sometimes I’ll select my daily meditation just by browsing what others have done. The playlists are broken down into categories like “self love and compassion” and “mindfulness”. You can also choose to do an unguided meditation, or go for what’s currently trending around the world. And the best part? It’s free!
Dubbed the mindfulness app for the modern generation, Buddhify is $4.99 and has over 80 guided meditations to suit every part of your day. Whether you’re traveling, at work or at home, there’s a meditation playlist for that. Just like Insights Timer, you can opt for guided or independent meditations. This app even has stats and graphs available so you can track your progress throughout your meditation journey.
For $1.99, The Mindfulness App provides you with a host of things such as 16 guided mindfulness meditations, standing and lying yoga exercises, body scans, as well as some inspirational quotes to encourage you to practice more mindfulness every single day.
Do you have a favorite author or spiritual celebrity? You just may discover one of their guided meditations in Omvana! In addition to meditation, this app contains loads of inspirational talks, poetry and music to help you manifest your dreams and live a life you love. While there are several free meditations included in this app, most of the content requires you to make a purchase to access it.
I’m really intrigued by the branding of Headspace, and I love how this app is marketed as “your gym membership for the mind.” Headspace has a unique model in which you can initially sign up for free and participate in their “Take 10” program. This provides you with an understanding about the basics of meditation over just 10 minutes a day. After the 10 days are up you can then choose to subscribe to one of their membership options, which unlocks their full meditation library of topics ranging from creativity, addiction, relationships and more.
Calm prides itself on its simplicity and absolute serenity. This app offers both timed and open-ended meditations, and it also has several 7 day programs to help you manage stress, sleep better, build self-esteem, show more gratitude, and be happy. Subscriptions for the Calm app are available at monthly, yearly or lifetime intervals.
